Launceston, Burnie and Devonport

These northern towns are the front doors to Tasmania, especially Devonport, which is the arrival point for the Spirit of Tasmania car and passenger ferry from Melbourne and Sydney. Launceston, up the Tamar Valley from the coast, is a delightfully well-preserved town of nineteenth-century streetscapes and cottages. It is well-serviced by museums, galleries, markets and, like most of Tasmania, is a wonderful showcase of the arts and crafts produced by talented locals.

All three towns have histories as important ports, and the maritime associations are strong. They are convenient starting points for mountain and coastal exploring. It's only 200km from the north coast to Hobart, but Tasmania holds such gems that a circuitous route is the best way to see it.
